How to configure folder sharing on macOS

Sharing folders on macOS allows devices on the same network to access your files. This feature is compatible with macOS, Windows, and Linux systems. It's useful for file sharing, collaboration, and accessing documents across different platforms.

The built-in File Sharing option in macOS is located in System Preferences. This tool uses AFP and SMB protocols to support cross-platform file sharing. You can quickly set up folder sharing for any device on your network.

Steps to share a folder on macOS:

  1. Open System Preferences from the Apple menu.
  2. Click on Sharing.
  3. Enable File Sharing by checking the box.
  4. Click the “+” under Shared Folders to select a folder to share.
  5. Choose the desired folder and click Add.
  6. To manage access, select the folder and use the “+” under Users to add users and set their permissions.
  7. Click Options to choose sharing protocols like SMB for cross-platform access.
  8. The folder will now be accessible on your network. Note the Computer Name or IP address for connecting from other devices.
  9. To stop sharing, select the folder from the Shared Folders list and click “-”.
