Windows 11 can display a Chat button on the taskbar that opens Microsoft Teams and messaging shortcuts. Disabling it keeps the taskbar cleaner and avoids accidental clicks, especially on shared devices or workstations where chat is not part of the workflow.
Windows 11 controls built-in taskbar buttons from the Taskbar items section in Settings. Switching Chat off hides only the taskbar entry point, while leaving the underlying apps available to install, update, or use separately.
Some Windows builds or managed environments may rename or suppress the option, and an organization policy can lock the toggle. If the Chat entry is missing, the button is already hidden or has been removed for that device configuration.
Steps to disable the Chat icon in Windows 11:
- Right-click an empty area of the Taskbar.

- Select Taskbar settings.
The same page is available from Settings → Personalization → Taskbar.
- Under Taskbar items, set Chat to Off.
This hides the taskbar icon but does not uninstall Microsoft Teams.
- Confirm the Chat icon is no longer visible on the taskbar.
