There are a number of programs that you can use to view running processes in Linux, and generally every desktop environment will include one of their own.

GNOME for example comes with GNOME System Monitor while KDE has System Activity. For all Linux distributions and other Unix-based operating systems however, you can always rely on ps and top command line utilities. This is especially true if you're connecting to remote servers using SSH.

List and show details of running processes in Linux:

  1. View running process using ps.
    $ ps
       PID TTY          TIME CMD
      1082 pts/0    00:00:00 bash
      1102 pts/0    00:00:00 ps

    By default, ps selects all processes with the same effective user ID (euid=EUID) as the current user and associated with the same terminal as the invoker. It displays the process ID (pid=PID), the terminal associated with the process (tname=TTY), the cumulated CPU time in [DD-]hh:mm:ss format (time=TIME), and the executable name (ucmd=CMD). Output is unsorted by default.

  2. View more running processes with more details using ps.
