Accessing shared directories on a local network is a common requirement for both home and enterprise environments. In Kubuntu running the KDE desktop, it is possible to connect to shared folders over SMB (commonly referred to as Windows file sharing) without extensive manual configuration. Understanding this feature provides convenient cross-platform file sharing and efficient workflow integration.
KDE includes a graphical file manager called Dolphin, which supports direct network browsing. The underlying framework uses kio-extras to handle network protocols such as SMB and FTP. With these components, users can interact with shared folders the same way they handle local directories.
Proper installation of the required packages ensures seamless connections. Dolphin can automatically prompt for credentials or configuration details if needed. This setup helps minimize manual editing of configuration files while maintaining secure file sharing on a unified network.
Steps to Access Shared Folders in Kubuntu (KDE):
- Open the application launcher and start Dolphin.
- Click “Network” in the left panel of Dolphin.
- Choose “Shared Folders (SMB)” or “Samba Shares” to view network hosts.
- Select the target server and navigate to the shared folder.
- Enter the required username and password when prompted.
- Create a shortcut by right-clicking the share and selecting “Add to Places” if desired.
Use //smb:SERVER_NAME/SHARE_NAME// in the location bar if the server does not appear automatically. </WRAP> - Close Dolphin once the shared files have been accessed.
Tested on Kubuntu:
Version Code Name 24.04 LTS Noble Numbat
