How to create private AWS S3 bucket

S3 buckets can be used to store all kinds of objects, not just for website assets such as JavaScript, CSS, or image files. It can also be used to store other sensitive files from your AWS systems, such as log files or backups. As such, they are by default set to be private when created.

Private buckets configuration ensures objects in these buckets which are not meant for public consumption are not accessible to everyone. You can create S3 bucket to securely and privately store your files from the S3 dashboard in the AWS console.

1. Go to S3 section in your AWS Console.

2. Click on the Create bucket icon.
3. Enter the name of the S3 bucket.

   The name must be unique regardless of regions. You'll get an error when trying to use bucket name already being used anywhere within S3

4. Click on the AWS Region select list.
5. Select the region for the S3 bucket.
6. Accept defults (Block all public access) on the public access section.
7. Configure other options for the S3 bucket as necessary.
8. Click on the Create bucket button.
9. Click on the bucket that you have just created.
10. Click on the Upload button.
11. Click on the Add files button.
12. Select the files to upload and click Open.
13. Click on the Upload button.
14. Click on the file that you have just uploaded.
15. Click on the link in the Object URL section.
16. Confirm S3 bucket is private by getting Access Denied error.
