A clear computer name makes the PC easier to identify in device inventories, remote access tools, and shared-network environments. Consistent naming reduces confusion when multiple machines appear in the same Windows workgroup or organization.
The computer name becomes the system hostname and is used by Windows networking for discovery and connections such as SMB file sharing and RDP. Renaming updates how the PC advertises itself on the network, without changing local user accounts, installed applications, or files.
Windows applies character and length limits for broad compatibility, and a restart is required before the new name is active everywhere. On domain-joined or organization-managed PCs, renaming can require additional credentials or be blocked by policy.
Keep the name to 15 characters or fewer, avoid spaces, and use only letters, numbers, and hyphens.
Restarting ends open sessions and can lose unsaved work.
