How to configure automatic login for Kubuntu (KDE)

Kubuntu is an official flavor of Ubuntu that incorporates the KDE desktop environment. It offers a customizable interface suited for modern workflows while maintaining the underlying stability of the Ubuntu base. The graphical settings provide extensive control over user sessions and login parameters, including the option for automatic login.

Enabling automatic login lets a system bypass the login prompt, which can be beneficial for kiosks, shared systems, or quick boot scenarios. It is performed through the KDE System Settings, facilitating seamless user access. The process modifies SDDM configuration, as SDDM is the display manager responsible for user authentication and session management in Kubuntu.

Auto login must be implemented carefully since it affects system security. Physical access to the computer allows direct access if no password prompt appears. Administrators and users who require heightened security should disable auto login or use strong encryption to protect sensitive data while balancing convenience and privacy.

1. Open “System Settings” from the application menu.
2. Click on “Startup and Shutdown” from the left sidebar.
3. Click on “Login Screen (SDDM)”.
4. Click on the “Behaviour” button.
5. Check the box next to “Automatically log in”.
6. Select your user account from the dropdown menu.

   If you only have one user account on your computer, it will be selected by default.

7. Click on “Apply” to save the changes.
8. Enter your password and click “OK”.
9. Restart your computer to test the changes.

   You will be automatically logged in to your user account without having to enter your password when your computer starts up.
